tldr: indian single malt is the best value in world whisky right now. indri trini (rs 3000-4500, ~$50 in the us) is the one to start with: smooth, award-winning, hard to dislike. amrut fusion (rs 3500-5000, ~$60 in the us) is the serious sipper. paul john, rampur and godawan round out a category that keeps beating scotch in blind judging. wherever you live, these bottles cost a fraction of what a comparable scotch does. prices below in rupees, dollars and pounds. use the currency switcher at the top to see everything in yours.

a few years ago, telling a scotch drinker to try an indian whisky got you a blank look. then indri’s diwali collection was named world’s best single malt at the 2023 world whiskies awards, amrut started showing up in every “best of” list, and the blank looks stopped.

india makes some of the most interesting whisky on the planet, and most of the world is only just finding out. this guide ranks the bottles worth your money, gives real prices in india, the us and uk, and tells you where to actually buy each one. if you already know the category, jump to amrut vs indri or the full indian whisky awards list.

why indian whisky punches above its price

heat does the work. a whisky warehouse in bangalore or rajasthan swings far hotter than anything in scotland, and that pushes spirit in and out of the oak much faster. the “angel’s share” you lose to evaporation runs around 10-12% a year in india versus 2% in scotland. the result: a four or five year old indian malt tastes like a scotch twice its age. richer, sweeter, more wood up front.

pair that with indian six-row barley and pot-still distillation, and you get a malt with its own accent. that’s the thing scotch can’t copy, and it’s why the medals keep coming. for the longer version, read indian whisky vs scotch.

indri trini - start here

trini means “three wood”: ex-bourbon, ex-wine, and ex-sherry casks married together. it’s the malt that made the world pay attention, and it earns the hype. soft, a little sweet, notes of dried fruit and spice, no rough edges. nothing about it scares a new drinker, and experienced ones still respect it.

it’s also usually the cheapest of the award winners, which makes it the obvious first buy. full notes in the indri trini review, or see how it stacks up in indri vs paul john.

amrut fusion - the one that started it all

amrut was beating scotch in blind tastings before most people knew india made single malt. fusion blends indian and scottish peated barley, bottled at a punchy 50%. it’s got weight: barley sweetness, a curl of smoke, dark fruit, a long finish. this is a sipping whisky for someone who already likes the category.

if indri is the easy yes, amrut is the one you grow into. the amrut fusion review has the full breakdown, and amrut vs indri settles the obvious question.

paul john, rampur, godawan

paul john comes out of goa and leans tropical: mango, honey, a coastal softness. brilliance is the unpeated entry point and it’s excellent value. the paul john review covers the range.

rampur, from the foothills of the himalayas, is the gentle one. honeyed, soft, low on burn. a good gift bottle. see the rampur select review.

godawan is the newcomer, an indian malt finished with indian botanicals. it’s rare and pricey and more of a collector’s curiosity than a daily pour, but it’s a sign of where the category is going. godawan review here.

for most people though, the local retailer price is fair. a $50 bottle of indri is one of the best deals on any whisky shelf, anywhere.

frequently asked questions

which is the best indian single malt whisky?

why is indian whisky winning global awards?

india's heat. whisky matures two to three times faster in a delhi or bangalore warehouse than in scotland, so a 4-5 year old indian malt drinks like a much older scotch. that fast maturation, plus six-row indian barley, is why amrut, paul john, rampur and indri keep beating scotch and japanese whisky in blind judging.

how much does indian single malt cost outside india?

in the us, expect roughly $50-75 for indri trini or amrut fusion. in the uk, around £45-60. in india the same bottles are rs 3000-5000. the overseas price is higher because of import duty and shipping, but it's still cheap for an award-winning single malt.
